What is a job card?

A job card is the document a Gram Panchayat gives to a rural family that registers for wage work under the employment guarantee law. One card covers the whole family. It carries the job card number, the names and photo of the adult members, and a running record of work asked for, days worked and wages paid.

The same record is kept online. That online record is the job card list: one line for every card in a panchayat. If your family is on the list, you can ask for work, check your attendance and follow your wage payments.

Under the new law the card is called the Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Card. In the village, on forms and in search, people still say job card, NREGA job card or MGNREGA job card. They all mean the same thing.

How to check the job card list online

You need a phone with internet and the name of your Gram Panchayat. We followed these steps on the official portal on the date shown at the top of this page.

  1. Open the official portalGo to vbgramg.dord.gov.in. Official addresses end in .gov.in or .nic.in.
  2. Tap “Analytics & Reports”, then “State Report”A page titled “State / UT Selection” opens with every state and union territory.
  3. Choose your stateThe state’s own page opens.
  4. Choose your district, block and Gram PanchayatIn some states a block is called a Panchayat Samiti, Mandal or Taluka. It is the same thing.
  5. Open the job card registerOn the panchayat’s page of reports, look for “Job card / Employment Register” in the first group.
  6. Find the family head’s nameThe list has one line for each family. Note the job card number next to the name, or take a screenshot.

Tip: in your browser menu, use “Find in page” and type the first few letters of the name. Names are typed in English, so “Kamla” may be saved as “Kamala”.

What the job card list shows

Each line has a serial number, the job card number and the name of the family head. The official list prints every job card number in one of four colours. The colour tells you whether a photo is on the card and whether the family has taken work.

  • ActiveGreen. Photo is on the card and the family has taken work.
  • No work yetGrey. Photo is on the card, but no work has been taken.
  • Photo missingYellow. The family has worked, but the photo is not uploaded. Ask the Gram Rozgar Sahayak to add it.
  • InactiveRed. No photo and no work. A card like this may be removed when the panchayat verifies its list.

How to read a job card number

A job card number is not random. Read from left to right, it tells you the state, district, block, panchayat and village where the card was issued, and ends with the family’s own number.

RJ–12–008–034–001/123
  • RJ State
  • 12 District
  • 008 Block
  • 034 Panchayat
  • 001 Village
  • 123 Family number

An example for Rajasthan. Your number starts with your own state’s two letters.

If you know only the number, the first three parts are enough to find the right state, district and block. Then look for the family number in your panchayat’s list.

NREGA, MGNREGA or VB-G RAM G: which name is right?

All three are in use. NREGA became MGNREGA in 2009. On 1 July 2026 a new law, the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, took its place. It is written as VB-G RAM G. For a worker, three things changed.

Your old job card is not cancelled. A card with e-KYC done stays valid until the new card is issued to you. If you are not sure about your e-KYC, ask the Gram Rozgar Sahayak at your panchayat.

A job card is free

Nobody is allowed to charge you for a job card, for adding a name, or for giving you work. If someone asks for money, tell your Gram Panchayat or the Programme Officer at the block office.

जॉब कार्ड बनवाना पूरी तरह मुफ़्त है। कोई पैसे माँगे तो ग्राम पंचायत या ब्लॉक कार्यालय में शिकायत करें।

If your name is not in the job card list

Do not panic, and do not pay anyone. Check these three things first.

  • Spelling. The panchayat types names in English. Search with only the first few letters.
  • Village. One panchayat can have several villages. Your card may be listed under a neighbouring village.
  • Deleted cards. A card can be removed if a family has moved away, if two cards were made for one family, or if verification failed. A card removed by mistake can be restored.

To get a card restored, give a written request at the Gram Panchayat with your Aadhaar and any proof of the old card, and ask for a dated receipt. If nothing happens, take a copy of the receipt to the Programme Officer at the block office. The official portal also has a Grievance Redressal section.
